The word Balayage comes from France and it means to sweep. Balayage is a technique not a style, Hairstylists use this technique to paint sections of hair with lightener or color to create a natural highlighted/dimensional effect.
Depending on the hair, in-order to achieve a natural “lived-in” dimensional look, you would definitely need our stylists to use the balayage technique along with other techniques if necessary. Cost of a Balayage depends on our guest’s end goal. If our guest is looking to be super bright with hardly any depth, or very colorful, the price will be on the higher end. If our guest is looking to achieve a very subtle amount of lightness with a lot of depth the price will be on the lower end. At Elegante hair studio in San Jose, Ca. we start our prices for balayage at $275+
The amount of time for a balayage session varies for each guest. At Elegante Hair Studio it can take anywhere from 2-8 hours depending on the amount of brightness and the level of lightness the guests want. Also, the amount of hair really takes up a big chunk of time. Usually, a true natural sun kissed balayage could take up to 2.5 hours.
How long does a balayage last? It lasts forever, once the hair is lightened it will never turn back to the natural hair color on its own. The only way to go back to natural is by scheduling a color correcting service or cutting off the pre-lightened hair. Even though the pre-lightened hair will forever be lightened the toner will have faded after 2-3 months depending on how well the hair is taken care of and how often the hair is washed. This is why it is important to have all the proper hair care products and to schedule ever 3 months for a color refresh appointment.
Balayage requires special attention, so keep these tips in mind while washing your hair at home. If you want to keep your balayage looking great, visit a salon at least twice a year for a fresh color. Ideally, you’ll need two full services and one partial service per year, but you can get away with one partial if you’re OK with brassiness between visits.
Taking care of your balayage at home is easy if you follow these tips. Wash your hair rarely and use a deep conditioning treatment every two weeks or so. You can also do touch-ups in between visits with purple shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to find a sulfate-free shampoo. After washing your hair at home, follow the directions on the bottle.
To maintain your balayage at home, wash sparingly and use a hair mask. You can also apply a lightweight hair oil, such as avocado oil, to damp hair after washing. To avoid further damage, wait at least two days before shampooing and conditioning your hair. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner after balayage.
Maintenance is extremely important for hair color. Since balayage is a lightening process and your hair color will go through different stages of warmth, you need to eliminate brassy tones by maintaining your hair with high-quality hair care products for color-treated hair in between your salon visits.
Balayage is a technique not a style, however there are many ways to apply color or lightener for a natural, outgrown, Sunkissed effect. Some people like a very heavy almost totally platinum blonde look while others like very subtle slithers of copper or caramel tones. These looks don’t always have to be in natural tones, they can also include vivid fashion colors. On Elegante’s website there are many examples of colorful looks using a balayage technique.
